How to retrofit apartment blocks?
Evidence-based solutions to support urban planning and retrofit projects

International Conference on Energy Efficient Renovation and Renewable Energy Integration

Date: 2nd – 3rd of October 2014
Location:  Hungary Radisson BLU Béke Hotel Budapest, Teréz krt 43.

It is recognised that improving energy efficiency of apartments is difficult for a number of reasons, but with 43% of the European population living in them it is essential to find solutions.

To find the best way to improve the present state of our living condition in urban areas, first we must understand the problem: the barriers to retrofitting apartments will be presented. Secondly, we should provide ‘ready-to-use’ tools, examples and methodologies.

This conference provides lessons and tools from three best-practice EU projects to give useful answers on planning, convincing investors, invest and monitoring to be able to cover the whole process.

Conference aim:
The aim of the conference to provide information about the tools, approaches and results of three best-practice projects to support decision makers and investors to find the best solutions for the future of apartment houses, and prevent them for stumbling.

Representing Projects:

STACCATO stands for Sustainable Technologies And Combined Community Approaches Take Off. Within this project three European capital cities (Amsterdam, Budapest and Sofia), demonstrate sustainable energy concepts in representative existing residential areas. www.concerto-staccato.eu

Low Energy Apartment Futures (LEAF) is a European-wide project aiming to improve the energy efficiency of apartment blocks. It aims to overcome a number of key barriers to retrofitting these properties such as the limitations of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and difficulties associated with buildings under multiple ownership. The project will develop a toolkit that provides a step-by-step approach to retrofitting apartment blocks and pilot this approach on 24 case study buildings. http://www.lowenergyapartments.eu

PIMES To make houses that take into account the local climate and at the same time reduces the need of heating or cooling will be the challenge for all partners (HU,ES, N). By exchanging experiences, sharing knowledge, developing new technology and using this in smart and economically reasonable ways we will create better living areas for the future. The project deals both retrofitting and newly built solutions. www.pimes.eu
