First results of social research

12.10.2010

Social research in Staccato primarily focuses on resident surveys before and after retrofit. The Obuda questionnaire survey is completed in the summer of 2009 (295 responses/ c. 1/3 households). The Amsterdam pre-retrofit survey started, but is incomplete (c.100 responses).

The first conclusions are:

  • The level of satisfaction with the energy costs were before the renovation low. On both demonstration sites this is the case.
  • When residents spent more than 10% of their income on energy, this is called fuel poverty.  On both demonstration sites this is the case.
  • There are huge differences in the anticipated disruption between Amsterdam and Obuda site. There was beforehand a lot of concern of the inhabitants in Amsterdam.
  • Another huge difference is the expectation of the energy bills after renovation. In Obuda people were more optimistic about this than in Amsterdam.

In Obuda 12 interviews took place after the retrofit. The residents still were very positive. They anticipated a significant improvement in their financial position, especially due to the higher value of their apartments. They also reported significant falls in energy bills, in the range of 30-60%.

More about the results from the social research will follow due the end of 2010.
